چکیده

Summary While several articles have been written on water waves flows with constant vorticity, little is known about the extent to which a non-constant vorticity affects flow structure, such as appearance of stagnation points. In order shed light this topic, we investigate in detail beneath solitary propagating an exponentially decaying sheared current. Our focus analyse numerically emergence For purpose, approximate velocity field within fluid bulk through classical Korteweg-de Vries asymptotic expansion and use Matlab language evaluate resulting stream function. findings suggest that can 0, 1 or 2 points body. We also study bifurcation between these flows. simulations indicate emerge from streamline sharp corner.

Plane Flows with Few Stagnation Points by Anatole Beck

Introduction. This announcement deals with the subject of continuous flows in the Euclidean plane. I t has long been known (cf. [ l]) tha t every closed set in the plane is the invariant set of some continuous flow. In a recent paper [2], this author has shown that the same statement is not true for flows all of whose orbits are closed in the plane. In fact a necessary and sufficient condition ...

Surface Waves on Vertically Sheared Flows: Approximate Dispersion Relations

Assuming linear wave theory for [1974] for deep water. We then obtain solutions waves riding on a weak current of O(c) compared to to the general problem to 0(1⁄2) (reproducing the the wave phase speed, an approximate dispersion result of Skop [1987]) and to 0(1⁄22). In section 3 relation is developed to 0(1⁄2 2 ) for arbitrary curwe apply the method to linear, cosine, and 1/7rent U(z) in water...

Interaction of finite-amplitude waves with vertically sheared current fields

A computationally efficient numerical method is developed to investigate nonlinear interactions between steep surface gravity waves and depth-varying ocean currents. The free-surface boundary conditions are used to derive a coupled set of equations that are integrated in time for the evolution of the free-surface elevation and tangential component of the fluid velocity at the free surface. The ...

Uphill solitary waves in granular flows.

We have experimentally observed uphill solitary waves in the surface flow on a granular material. A heap is constructed by injecting sand between two vertical glass plates separated by a distance much larger than the average grain size, with an open boundary. As the heap reaches the open boundary, solitary fluctuations appear on the flowing layer and move "up the hill" (i.e., against the direct...

Seismic Rayleigh waves on an exponentially graded, orthotropic half-space

Efforts at modelling the propagation of seismic waves in half-spaces with continuously varying properties have mostly been focused on shear-horizontal waves. Here, a sagittally polarized (Rayleigh type) wave travels along a symmetry axis (and is attenuated along another) of an orthotropic material with stiffnesses and mass density varying in the same exponential manner with depth. In contrast t...
